  • Chapter 16. Level-crossings

    • 126. Drivers may cross railways only through level-crossings, giving way to a railway vehicle.
    • 127. When approaching a level-crossing, the driver is obliged to verify the absence of an approaching railway vehicle and obey the instructions of an on-duty level-crossing operator, requirements of traffic lights, road signs, road markings, the position of the gates and sound signal.
    • 128. It is prohibited:
    • 128.1. to enter a level-crossing:
    • 128.1.1. when the gates are across the road or in the process of being placed across the road regardless of the traffic lights signal;
    • 128.1.2. upon a prohibitory signal of traffic lights regardless of presence and position of the gates;
    • 128.1.3. upon a prohibitory signal of an on-duty level-crossing operator (the driver faces his the chest or the back of the operator with a lamp emitting red light raised above the head , or with a red flag, or laterally outstretched arms);
    • 128.1.4. if there is a congestion behind the level-crossing that will compel the driver to stop on the level-crossing;
    • 128.1.5. if there is a railway vehicle approaching the level-crossing in view;
    • 128.2. to bypass vehicles standing before the level-crossing by entering the lane reserved for oncoming traffic;
    • 128.3. to open the gates without permission;
    • 128.4. to transport through a level-crossing agricultural, road, construction and other machinery and mechanisms in the position in which they can become an obstruction to traffic, damage road surface, railways, level-crossing equipment, technical means of road traffic organization;
    • 128.5. traffic of vehicles with overall dimensions exceeding 4 meters in height from the road surface through a level-crossing on electrified sections — without a consent of the Head of the electric supply railway division of the Belarusian railway;
    • 128.6. traffic of low-speed vehicles through a level-crossing at a speed of less than 8 km/h, and of cargo sled — without a permission of the Head of the railway maintenance section.
    • 129. In case when the traffic through a level-crossing is prohibited, the driver must stop at the road sign “Stop” or “Stop Line” (line of horizontal road marking 1.12), in their absence — before the traffic lights, in the absence of traffic lights — at least 5 meters from the gates, in the absence of the gates — by the road sign “Single-track railway” or “Multi-track railway”, in the absence of technical means of the road traffic organization — at least 10 meters from the nearest rail.
    • 130. When a vehicle is compelled to stop on the level-crossing, the driver is obliged to turn on hazard warning lights, immediately to set down all passengers and to take measures to clear the level-crossing.

      Simultaneously, the driver must, if possible, send two persons along the railway track in both directions from the crossing at a distance of 1 kilometer (if one person — then in the direction of the worse visibility of the railway track), explaining them the procedure for making the stop signal to the locomotive driver of an approaching railway vehicle, and himself — stay near the vehicle and give signals of general alarm (combination of one long and three short sound signals).

      When of a railway vehicle appears, the driver (passenger) is obliged to run towards it, giving a signal to stop, observing safety precautions. Stop signal is a circular movement by arm (by day the afternoon — with a scrap of brightly coloured fabric or an object easily visible, at night — with a lantern or torch).
